Hi all, I was wondering what the people of this great tribe think/feel about shellfish in general....
In Italy (where I am from) people, tend to eat quite a bit of them, they are rich in iron, b12 and zinc... they are not vegetarian, but do they have a consciousness?... Will they give a message of death to the bodies of those who consume them? Do they suffer? and anything else might be your opinion over those items as food rather than not...
I really am trying to figure it out, whatever your opinions are please refrain from being confrontational, I really do not have a firm formed opinion, that is why I will be happy to hear others.....

Re: Clams and muscles
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 3:29 PMIf it has a nervous system, I don't eat it. Nervous system = pain.
A vegetarian once told me she doesn't eat anything that poops. Funny, but also true. -

Mon, December 22, 2008 - 3:55 PMThank you Rach... do you know if in order to perceive pain a brain is required? I thought pain was an impulse that the brain would transform into discomfort... but I really do not know....
the poop issue is a good point too.... :-) -

Wed, December 17, 2008 - 3:59 PMConsciousness is the energy or the symptom of the soul. Even plants have consciousness, to a lesser degree, but plant life can be made into Prasadam and thus can become karma free. -

Re: Clams and muscles
Tue, January 13, 2009 - 6:31 AMI personally believe that the plants and rocks have consciousness too - albeit quite different from our own. While I choose a plant-based diet, I believe it is important to remember that life feeds on death. In order for us to feed, we are often taking the life of something, even if it is a plant. Respect and acknowledgment of that sacrifice is important to me. I know a few yogins who will only eat parts of the plant that are voluntarily dropped by the plant - the fruits and seed pods. Things like squashes and avocado and peppers and of course sweet fruits, and such. Another place to take the awareness and respect for the life forms that nourish our bodies and give the gift of life to us!
